Shree Krishna's Birth and Crossing of Yamuna Maa
The land of Braj is eternally intertwined with the presence of Lord Krishna, and at the heart of this sacred landscape is the River Yamuna. In our spiritual tradition, Yamuna Maharani is the personification of pure devotion (bhakti). Her waters are infused with divine love, acting as an active, conscious participant in the pastimes of the Lord. She flows to serve, protect, and enhance the divine plays of Shree Krishna, witnessing His life from His very first moments on Earth to His various divine pastimes.
The Awaited Night
The tyrannical king Kansa, driven by fear of a prophecy that his sister Devaki's eighth child would be the cause of his death, had unleashed a reign of terror. He imprisoned Devaki and her husband, Vasudev, ruthlessly taking the lives of their newborn children one by one.
As the month of Bhadrapada (August–September in the traditional Hindu calendar) approached, Kansa grew increasingly apprehensive. Determined to prevent the prophecy from coming true, he placed his guards on high alert and awaited the birth of the eighth child with mounting fear.The days passed, and on the Ashtami tithi of Krishna Paksha, at the stroke of midnight, the Supreme Lord manifested before Vasudev and Devaki in His divine six-foot-tall, four-armed form. Overwhelmed with devotion, Devaki recognized the Lord standing before her. She understood that He had appeared to fulfill the boon granted in a previous birth, when she had prayed that the Supreme Lord Himself would become her child.
Devaki folded her hands and prayed, "O Lord, You have appeared before us in Your divine form. But how shall I experience the joy of motherly affection if You remain like this? Please conceal this majestic form and allow me the bliss of thinking of You as my child."The Lord accepted her prayer. He instructed Vasudev to carry Him across the Yamuna to Gokul, to the house of Nanda Baba and Yashoda Maiya. There, a baby girl had taken birth through the arrangement of Yogmaya. Vasudev was to leave Krishna there and bring the infant girl back to Mathura.
Having given His instructions, the Lord assumed the form of a beautiful newborn child.
Vasudev's Journey Across the Yamuna
Following the Lord's command, Vasudev gently placed the baby into a wicker basket and lifted it upon his head.Then the Lord's divine arrangement unfolded.
The prison guards fell into a deep sleep, the chains loosened, and the massive iron doors unlocked on their own, opening a clear path before him. Carrying the divine child, Vasudev stepped into the stormy night and began his journey toward Gokul.Rain clouds covered the sky as he reached the sacred Yamuna and entered her waters.
At that moment, Anantashesh, eager to serve his beloved Lord, came to assist. Supporting Vasudev from beneath, he ensured that the waters would not overwhelm him. At the same time, he spread his magnificent hoods above the basket like a divine umbrella, shielding the newborn child from the falling rain. Unaware of this divine assistance, Vasudev continued steadily across the river.
Yamuna's Longing
But Yamuna Devi was growing restless. Her beloved Lord was crossing her waters in the enchanting form of a newborn child. The longing within her grew stronger and stronger. This was His first appearance in the world in this avatar. She desired His darshan.
Turbulent with the intense desire to touch His lotus feet, her waters began to rise. Seeing the river deepen, Vasudev lifted the basket higher and higher. Though appearing to be asleep, Shree Krishna remained fully aware of the devotion within the heart of His beloved devotee. Desiring to bestow His grace upon Yamuna Devi, He gently extended His tiny foot from the basket.
Yamuna Devi rose in a great wave and touched the lotus feet of Shree Krishna.
Having received His divine touch, she was content. Her waters began to recede and parted to give way for Vasudev to continue his journey.
Arrival in Gokul
Crossing the Yamuna, Vasudev reached Gokul in the stillness of the night. All of Braj lay asleep. Entering the house of Nanda Baba and Yashoda Maiya, he found the newborn baby girl resting beside Yashoda. Following the Lord's instructions, he placed Shree Krishna there, lifted the infant girl, and began the journey back to Mathura.
The divine child had safely arrived in Gokul, and the stage was set for the wondrous childhood pastimes that would soon unfold upon the sacred land of Braj.
Spiritual Reflection
Yamuna Devi's longing to receive the touch of Krishna's lotus feet reveals a profound spiritual truth. The Vedic scriptures explain that all living beings are eternal fragments of the Supreme Lord. Having originated from Him, the soul naturally seeks reunion with Him.
Throughout countless lifetimes, we search for happiness, fulfillment, and lasting satisfaction in the world around us. Yet the deepest longing of the soul can be fulfilled only through its connection with the Divine.
On the night of Krishna's birth, Yamuna Devi desired nothing more than the touch of her beloved Lord. When Krishna extended His tiny foot and blessed her, her longing was fulfilled and her waters became calm once again.
This beautiful moment reminds us that the soul finds its greatest fulfillment in drawing closer to the Supreme Lord, from whom it has never truly been separate.
