When Krishna purified the waters of Yamuna Maa
The sacred river of Yamuna witnessed countless childhood pastimes of Shree Krishna. Her banks echoed with the laughter of the cowherd boys, her waters reflected the beauty of Braj, and her presence became inseparable from Krishna's divine play.Yet there was a time when a portion of Yamuna had become a source of fear for the residents of Braj.Deep within her waters the virulent serpent king Kaliya made his abode. The presence of this venomous serpent had turned the surrounding area into a place dreaded by all living beings.
Kaliya's Poisoned Domain
Deep under the Yamuna river, Kaliya lived along with his wives in a pool of water known as Kaliya daha.
Ordinarily, Garuda, the mighty carrier of Lord Vishnu, would have driven away such a serpent. However, Saubhari Rishi had performed severe austerities beneath the waters, so Garuda was forbidden to enter that place. Knowing this, Kaliya established himself in Kaliya daha and spread his poisonous influence throughout the region.The venom of Kaliya was so virulent that it poisoned not only the river but even the surrounding air. The water constantly boiled from the heat of his venom. Birds flying overhead would be scorched and fall into the waters. Grass, trees, animals, and other creatures that came into contact with the poisonous vapors perished.
Yamuna seethed in distress, in the presence of Kaliya, her waves swirling fiercely as poison spread through the river. What had once been life-giving waters had become a place feared by every creature that approached it.
Krishna Resolves to Protect Yamuna Maa
One day, Shree Krishna and His friends were playing ball on the banks of the Yamuna. They had this rule in the game that whoever caused the ball to fall into the river had to retrieve it.
As the game progressed, the ball rolled toward Kaliya Daha. Some of the boys ran after it, but as they approached the water's edge, they were overcome by the poisonous fumes and collapsed.
Krishna saw the suffering caused by Kaliya and the condition of Yamuna. Determined to free Yamuna from this poison and restore her natural purity, He resolved to drive Kaliya away.
Nearby stood a Kadamba tree, one of the few trees that had survived beside the poisonous waters. Climbing swiftly to its topmost branch, Krishna leapt into the river. He then began to churn the water vigorously. That disturbance enraged Kaliya who rose swiftly from the depths to confront the intruder. When he saw Krishna before him, he fumed with anger that a mere boy had entered his domain. He wrapped his enormous coils around Krishna and dragged Him down to the river bed.
The cowherd boys watched in horror and cried out for Krishna. The news reached Nanda Baba and Yashoda Maiya, and the residents of Braj, who rushed to the banks of Yamuna in distress. Seeing the turbulent waters and hearing what had happened, they were overcome with fear. Yashoda Maiya, frantic for Krishna’s safety , rushed to jump into the waters herself to rescue her son, while others struggled to restrain her.
Krishna understood their anguish. Before anyone could leap into the poisoned waters in desperation, He decided to act. He started expanding His form, becoming unbearably heavy. Unable to withstand the pressure, Kaliya loosened his coils and released Him.
The Divine Dance
Released from Kaliya's grasp, Krishna rose once again to the surface of the Yamuna. Furious and humiliated, Kaliya followed Him, raising his many hoods high above the water.Seizing the moment to strike, Kaliya fixes his gaze upon Shree Krishna. His eyes blazing red with fury, Kaliya spewed flames of venom from his mouth and nostrils. Shree Krishna, agile like a fish darting in the water, playfully changes His stance again and again. In this exchange of swift movements, Kaliya’s strength slowly begins to fade. Then Krishna pressed His foot onto one of Kaliya's hoods, and leapt on it.Standing on Kaliya’s hood, in a moment that would be remembered for all time, Krishna began to dance. Whenever one hood rose in defiance, Krishna subdued it beneath His lotus feet and sprang gracefully onto another. It is said that Lord Shiva's Tandav Nritya is the most magnificent dance in the universe. Yet this divine dance of Krishna upon the moving platform of the hoods of Kaliya surpassed even that.
The celestial beings gathered to witness the extraordinary spectacle. Drums resounded, conches were blown, and heavenly musicians filled the sky with music as Krishna danced in divine trance, enchanting all who beheld Him.
Gradually Kaliya's strength began to fail. The hoods that had once risen proudly now fell one after another beneath the touch of Krishna's lotus feet. Blood flowed from the serpent's mouths, his movements weakened, and his resistance faded. Exhausted and overwhelmed, Kaliya stood at the threshold of death.
The Prayers of the Naga Patnis
Unable to bear the sight of their husband suffering, the Naga Patnis emerged from the waters and approached Shree Krishna with folded hands.
They did not attempt to defend Kaliya's actions. They acknowledged that his arrogance, cruelty, and pride had brought him to this condition. Yet they also recognized his great fortune.
The greatest sages and yogis perform severe austerities in the hope of receiving the dust of the Lord's lotus feet. Kaliya, though deeply flawed, had now received those very lotus feet upon his heads. In their prayers, the Naga Patnis glorified the Lord's mercy and begged Him to spare their husband.
Their words softened Kaliya's heart as well. The serpent who had once ruled through fear now stood humbled before Shree Krishna. Realizing his mistakes, he bowed before the Lord and sought forgiveness.
Yamuna Devi Freed from Kaliya's Poison
Krishna accepted Kaliya's surrender and spared his life. He instructed him to leave Yamuna and depart from Braj forever. He assured Kaliya that when Garuda saw the marks of His lotus feet upon the serpent's heads, he would no longer trouble him.
Having received the Lord's mercy, Kaliya departed with his wives and left the waters of Yamuna.
Freed from the serpent's poisonous presence, Yamuna was restored. By the grace of Shree Krishna, her waters once again became pure, sweet, and life-giving like nectar. The residents of Braj rejoiced, and Yamuna Devi was relieved of the burden she had borne for so long.
Spiritual Reflection
The Kaliya Daman Leela reminds us of a profound spiritual truth. Just as Kaliya’s venom made the life-giving waters of the Yamuna boil, the poison of our own ego, manifesting as anger, jealousy, and arrogance, pollutes our inner consciousness. When these negative tendencies take over, they scorch our peace of mind.
But, just as Shree Krishna restored the purity of Yamuna, He also restores purity within those who sincerely seek Him. By firmly attaching our mind to God, our hearts naturally become purified. Just as darkness vanishes the moment a lamp is lit, the toxic thoughts in our mind cannot coexist with the remembrance of the Lord. As we surrender to Him, the poisonous loses their grip on us. The more our heart becomes absorbed in God, the more His grace transforms our inner nature and allows our innate divine qualities to shine forth.
