About the Puja

The Lord Who Is Truth Itself

Shri Satyanarayan Puja is the worship of Lord Vishnu as Satyanarayan — the Lord who is Truth. Described in the Reva Khanda of the Skanda Purana, it is one of the most beloved observances in Hindu homes and temples across the world.

Families offer it in gratitude and in hope — at a griha pravesh, a wedding, the birth of a child, a new venture, or simply on Purnima. At its heart is the katha: five sacred chapters heard together, followed by aarti and prasad.

The Sacred Narrative

Five Chapters.
One Eternal Truth.

I

Narada’s Question

Moved by the suffering on earth, Devarishi Narada asks Lord Vishnu how people may be freed from sorrow. The Lord reveals the Satyanarayan Vrat — a simple worship, offered with loved ones, that brings peace.

Devotion is the simplest path

II

The Brahmin & the Woodcutter

A poor Brahmin of Kashi, guided by the Lord in disguise, performs the puja and his hardship lifts. A thirsty woodcutter sees it, vows to do the same — and with faith alone, both find prosperity.

The door is open to every soul

III

The Merchant’s Promise

Sadhu the merchant vows the puja if blessed with a child. Kalavati is born, yet he delays — again and again. The forgotten vow returns as misfortune, and he is falsely imprisoned far from home.

A promise to God is kept

IV

Leelavati & Kalavati

His wife and daughter perform the puja and he is freed. But Kalavati rushes to greet her husband without taking prasad, and his boat vanishes — until she returns, honours the prasad, and he is restored.

Prasad is grace — receive it

V

King Tungadhwaja

A proud king refuses the humble prasad of cowherds and loses his sons and wealth. Humbled, he returns, worships beside them and accepts the prasad — and all that was lost is restored.

Before the Lord, none is high or low

Why Devotees Keep the Vrat

Truth as the Divine

To worship Satyanarayan is to worship Truth. The vrat reminds every family that honesty in word and deed is itself the highest offering to the Lord.

☾

The Blessing of Purnima

The full-moon day is held especially auspicious — many families keep the vrat every month.

❀

Gratitude & New Beginnings

House-warmings, weddings, births and new ventures begin with thanks.
