Why Yoga Is More Relevant Than Ever in Today's World: A Transformational Journey to Awaken Body, Mind, and Soul
Every year, millions of people across the world roll out a yoga mat in search of better health, reduced stress, increased flexibility, and a greater sense of well-being. As modern life becomes increasingly fast-paced and demanding, the practice of yoga continues to grow in popularity as a powerful tool for restoring balance and harmony.

Yet despite its widespread practice, the true meaning of yoga is often misunderstood. For many, it is simply seen as a series of physical postures designed to improve strength and flexibility. While these physical benefits are certainly valuable, they represent only a small part of a much deeper and richer ancient tradition.
The science of yoga views human well-being through a much broader lens. It goes far beyond physical health, opening the doorway to a profound inner journey that has inspired seekers for thousands of years.
This June 20 and 21, the Radha Krishna Temple of North Carolina invites residents of North Carolina and neighboring communities to discover the broad vision of yoga at our upcoming NC Yoga Festival on the occasion of International Yoga Day.
Why Do We Celebrate International Yoga Day Globally?
Before diving into the practices, let us first understand: why does this global celebration exist? In 2014, the United Nations officially declared June 21 as International Yoga Day. The goal was profound yet simple: to raise global awareness of the holistic benefits of practicing yoga and to bring the world together in health, peace, and harmony.
June 21 is also the Summer Solstice, the longest day of the year. In yogic culture, this seasonal transition holds great significance, marking a time of light, inner growth, and illumination. Celebrating on this day connects our personal practice directly to the natural rhythms of the world around us.
As we celebrate International Yoga Day, it is worth asking this important question: What is yoga really?
Yoga: More Than Physical Exercise
The journey into yoga often begins with the body. Through regular practice of yogasanas, yoga postures, the body becomes stronger, more agile, and better balanced. Energy levels improve, posture becomes healthier, and many people experience a renewed sense of vital energy.
Unlike many forms of exercise that focus primarily on muscles and endurance, yogasanas work on the body in a more holistic way. Different postures stretch, strengthen, and support various systems of the body, including the spine, joints, glands, and internal organs.
For example, Surya Namaskar provides a complete body workout that improves strength, flexibility, circulation, and cardiovascular fitness. Postures such as Bhujangasana, Cobra Pose, help strengthen the back and improve spinal flexibility, while many twisting and stretching postures support healthy digestion and overall vitality.

Have you ever noticed how your breath changes when you are anxious, angry, or stressed? Likewise, when you are calm and peaceful, your breathing naturally becomes slower and more relaxed. The ancient yogis recognized this profound connection between the body, breath, and mind.
This understanding gave rise to pranayama, the yogic science of breath regulation. By learning to work with the breath, practitioners gradually learn to calm the nervous system, improve concentration, and cultivate greater emotional balance.

As yoga deepens further, it naturally leads to meditation. Meditation helps us gradually gain mastery over the wandering mind. Instead of allowing our attention to be scattered in countless directions, we learn to focus it with greater clarity and purpose. This ability to direct the mind becomes invaluable not only in spiritual practice, but also in everyday life.
Roopdhyan, transcendental meditation on the image of God, helps purify the mind.
Yoga, therefore, is not simply a workout for the body. It is a journey inward.

The Purpose of Yoga
The word yoga comes from the Sanskrit root yuj, meaning to unite. But what exactly are we seeking to unite?
According to the yogic tradition, the ultimate purpose of yoga extends far beyond mental stress relief or physical flexibility. At its heart, yoga is about reconnecting the individual soul with the Divine.
Every human being longs for lasting happiness, peace, and fulfillment. Yet no amount of material comfort, career achievement, or external success can fully satisfy this longing. While such things may provide temporary pleasure, the sense of fulfillment they offer is fleeting, and the search for something more always continues.
Yoga invites us to look beyond the body and mind and discover the deeper essence of who we are.
The uniqueness of yoga lies in the fact that it addresses the whole person. It begins with the body through asanas, works with the breath through pranayama, trains the mind through meditation, and ultimately helps us explore deeper questions about our identity, purpose, and relationship with the Divine. In this way, yoga is not merely a fitness routine but a complete system for human development. Through consistent practice, it helps increase self-awareness, develop greater mastery over the mind, and gradually deepen our understanding of who we truly are.
Ancient Wisdom for Mental Health Benefits
Maharishi Patanjali, often regarded as the father of classical yoga, described yoga as chitta vritti nirodhah, the process of quieting the constant fluctuations of the mind. More than two thousand years later, his insight feels remarkably relevant.
We live in a world of endless notifications, information overload, and increasing demands on our attention. Yet the human mind struggles with many of the exact same challenges it always has: worry, distraction, dissatisfaction, and emotional turbulence. The practices of yoga, pranayama, meditation, mindfulness, and self-awareness provide practical tools to help us navigate these modern challenges and cultivate greater clarity, focus, and resilience.
The world around us will continue to change. Success and failure, praise and criticism, gain and loss are all a natural part of life's journey. One of yoga's greatest gifts is its ability to help us cultivate an inner peace that is not dependent on external circumstances. In many ways, the wisdom of yoga is more relevant today than ever before.
